How is a charter school funded?
A charter school is funded by the public school system (federal, state and local tax dollars), grants, and
donations. The amount that funding, that each student receives for public education is passed through the school district to the charter school. The students are still transported to and from school
by the school district.
Can Charter Schools have sports teams?
Charter schools can be PIAA members and have the same sports teams that are available in any Pennsylvania public school.
Who actually runs the school?
- A charter school operates independently from the school district. It has its own principal and a board of directors. They choose the curriculum, have their own teaching methodology, and they hire
and pay the teachers and staff.
- Charter schools have less restrictions and regulations than the school district allowing more flexibility. Strong community connections can be built. For example, the band and chorus could
include adults from the community to encourage and teach the students. This can enhance the quality of living for the whole community.
- A charter school also has a higher level of accountability to produce positive academic results based on the school's charter. There is still PSSA testing and students MUST meet state graduation
requirements.
